The Balqees Initiative (TBI), implemented during Sept 2009 – May 2012, and funded by the U.S. Embassy in Yemen, was a women leadership development and community-level awareness-raising project targeting women and youth from Mareb, Shabwah, Al Jawf, and Al Baida. TBI aimed to empower women from tribal areas of Yemen in conflict management and mitigation, health and education, and leadership to address community and women issues, and raise awareness and advocacy about health and education among tribal females. The project trained 75 women leaders in community engagement, leadership skills, conflict resolution, and entrepreneurship as well as on thematic issues such as health and hygiene for women, education for girls, and small enterprise. These women were then responsible for training at least 750 women volunteers from their local communities, who in turn hosted over 8,000 community outreach events throughout 42 districts in the targeted areas on relevant education, health, and economic development topics reaching out to over 127,000 women and youth.  TBI developed two awareness booklets one was a picture made booklet for illiterate people and the second conflict management manual.
